The (scene) contains what is accepted as necessary when it is not yet so; the (other scenes), what is imagined as possible and, a moment later, is possible no longer – from Invisible Cities by Itlaio Calvino

I am a Bay Area painter working primarily in oils. I move the pigments across the canvas with my hands, no brushes, focusing on light and building atmosphere layer by layer. My influences are Rothko, Turner, and the Hudson River School of painters.

While a life longer painter and lover of the arts, I actually taught elementary school for 35 years and finally went to art school in France as an adult with the belief that it is never too late to follow your dreams.

In this series I am exploring light, atmosphere, and the passage of time. Time passes and much changes, yet there is a quality that remains and holds history. I am exploring that ephemeral essence, that light that comes through all things alive, that feeling one gets when you look out and feel "ah, I am at peace here." By eliminating many recognizable forms, I seek to take a landscape down to its barest bones and let the viewers emotions, memories and personal history fill in the scene.

With inspiration from Rothko, I also seek a separation of space and color as the backdrop, loving the sometimes gentle, sometimes not so gentle vibration that comes from shifting hues and values with a color space, putting colors in conversation with each other. From Turner I strive to emulate his strong sense of movement and emotion.

While Rothko and Turner may seem like odd bedfellows, they both inform my work equally. It is the power of emotion they can evoke in the simplest of forms. This is my journey.
