Pamela Kogen ‘s mixed media paintings are an abstract response to her life, lived by and on the sea. Color plays a significant role in the plastic world she creates, a response to an ever-changing tidal environment. Her painterly abstractions integrate the free spirit of her line and mark-making, her vocabulary of mark-making, gesture and form intertwine creating a sense of spirited openness. Pamela often incorporates stitching in her work, the lines of thread a reverent nod to her mother, woman’s work and sail repair.

“Creating art is a way for me to synthesize the visual splendor, and constantly shifting reflective water world surrounding me. The challenges and tensions one often experiences on the water, in turn play out in the studio- lessons in being present.”

Pamela has often included working textiles in her artwork, such as burlap and ticking, drawn to their history and utility. A life long sailor, she has recently been repurposing old sails in her mixed media works opening an exciting new chapter that brings together her passion for sailing and art-making.

Pamela graduated from Parsons School of Design (NYC) with a BA in painting.
